Kickboxing

Kickboxing is a relatively modern Martial Art, originating in Japan as recently as the 1960s. Osamu Noguchi, who was a boxing promoter at the time, became a student of Muay Thai and wondered if the two disciplines might be combined.

Over time he developed a unique style which he called Kickboxing, on which we now base all our current styles. In the beginning, in order to distinguish this art from Muay Thai, you were able to throw and butt, however these were later ruled out.

The first Kickboxing event was held in Osaka on April 11th 1966 and the sport was quick to gain popularity, with many of the organized events being broadcast on television. One of the competitors at the time was Tadashi Sawamura who was very popular and attracted huge crowds to each of his fights. However, after he retired Kickboxing wasn’t seen on television again until K-1 was founded in 1993. Following this, the sport’s popularity flourished and it soon spread throughout Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Although each country’s rules vary slightly, Kickboxing relies primarily on punching, kicking, elbows, rib-shattering knees and, of course, a good defense. If you’d like to discover whether Kickboxing might be your style, please contact Elements Academy to try out one of our classes.
