Eric Nerland Eric has been training Hapkido since 2000 and currently holds a red belt. To Eric, Hapkido is the epitome of martial arts because of its simple effectiveness and its practical application of technique; it has solutions to the problems you might face in any situation. Eric strives very diligently toward his black belt in the flowing art of Hapkido and has a strong, disciplined attitude and approach. Part of Eric’s dedication to martial arts is keeping his skills up-to-date and he is currently training in Brazilian jiujitsu under the tutelage of Elements Academy Instructor Todd Smith. Eric believes that the two disciplines complement each other with their emphasis on flow, joint manipulation and re-direction of force. Students in his classes can look forward to a fusion of styles and martial arts principles that is challenging, fun and functional. Eric has quite a traditional focus and believes that there ought to be an element of respect inherent to any martial arts practice. By combining that mutual respect with patience, encouragement, fun and hard work, he is able to bring out the very best in his students. To Eric, learning martial arts has been about building character and adding a dimension of fulfillment to his athletic pursuits. His personal focus is not on achieving accolades, ribbons or trophies, but more on the reward of a deep understanding of the martial arts, and a respect for their skills and traditions. He also strongly supports the belt system, as it allows both himself and his students to set challenges for themselves and to push the limits of their capabilities. |
